One APIA Nevada Hosts “Know Your Rights” Online Seminar, Empowering Immigrant Communities with Legal Knowledge

Las Vegas, NV – April 11, 2025 — One APIA Nevada successfully hosted a “Know Your Rights” online legal seminar on the evening of April 11 via Zoom, specifically tailored for the Chinese-speaking community. The event featured live Mandarin interpretation, personally provided by One APIA Nevada Executive Director Eric Jeng, ensuring that participants could fully and accurately understand essential legal information in their native language. The seminar drew strong participation from members of the local Chinese community, significantly enhancing their awareness of legal rights and practical strategies for protecting themselves.

The seminar was moderated by Eric Jeng, who emphasized the organization’s mission in his opening remarks: “We host seminars like this to make sure every community member, regardless of language, knows their rights and feels empowered to exercise them.”

The featured speaker was Athar Haseebullah, Executive Director of the ACLU of Nevada. He delivered an in-depth presentation covering fundamental constitutional rights, best practices when interacting with law enforcement, and how to protect oneself from unlawful searches or questioning. “Whether you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or hold another immigration status, you are protected by the U.S. Constitution,” Haseebullah stated. “Knowing your rights is the first step toward protecting your safety and dignity.”

Notably, Jenny Koo, President of the Nevada Chinese Association, participated in the seminar and raised key legal concerns on behalf of the Chinese community—particularly issues green card holders may encounter when re-entering the United States. Her question sparked wide interest and was met with detailed and practical guidance from the speaker.

The seminar also covered critical topics such as the right to remain silent, the right to refuse a search, and how to respond when approached by ICE or police, as well as the difference between a judicial warrant and a immigration warrant. A live Q&A session followed, with active engagement and thoughtful questions from attendees.

This “Know Your Rights” seminar is part of One APIA Nevada’s ongoing legal education series, which aims to deliver accessible, multilingual, and culturally relevant legal resources to AAPI communities—especially those with limited English proficiency.

The organization stated that it will continue to offer multilingual, cross-platform legal education programs to empower Nevada’s diverse communities and promote equality, respect, and justice.
