For couples retiring in China, Social Security planning involves more than adding up two individual retirement benefits. A lower-earning spouse may qualify for spousal benefits, and a surviving spouse may later qualify for survivor benefits. But spousal benefits are not simply “half of the other spouse’s check,” survivor benefits do not mean collecting both full benefits, and living abroad may add additional payment requirements.
