For first-generation Chinese immigrants who have acquired foreign citizenship after decades abroad, “returning to one’s roots” is no longer simply about going back to where they were born. China has changed, they have changed, and family, assets, and social ties may now span two countries. The real question may be not where they ultimately belong, but which living arrangement best fits the next stage of life.
